Chinyika High School is located in Goromonzi District, Mashonaland East Province, Zimbabwe. It is owned by the Salvation Army and it has a boarding facility for girls only. It will start admitting boys into boarding from January 2025.

Located 35 km from Harare, the school was established in 1981 as a cheaper alternative for the local community whose children could not be absorbed by the more expensive local boarding schools.

Chinyika High School is a source of pride for the Salvation Army due to its commitment to Christian values, discipline, and quality education.

As highlighted by Salvation Army Commissioner Wayne Bungay, the school focuses on not only teaching academic facts but also fostering critical thinking, justice, faith, and community transformation. The school's visionary leadership, led by Mr. E. Chakwizira, has overseen important developments in recent years.

Under his leadership, Chinyika High School has made remarkable progress through self-sustained funding initiatives.

These efforts have provided the school with a well-stocked, modern library, new classroom blocks that have eliminated hot-sitting, and a new borehole that supplies running tap water to newly built toilets.

The borehole provides a steady, self-sufficient source of clean water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and garden maintenance, which is crucial for day-to-day activities and the well-being of boarding students.

In addition to these infrastructure developments, the school supports community development by providing scholarships for orphans, including 16 adopted children, many of whom are HIV-positive.

These children receive full support, including fees, uniforms, and other necessities.

Curriculum:

Chinyika High offers both Ordinary Level (O-Level) and Advanced Level (A-Level) programs, following the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) syllabus.

The school's curriculum is broad, covering essential academic subjects such as Mathematics, English, Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Commercial subjects like Business Studies, Accounting, and Economics are also taught, ensuring a comprehensive education that caters to various career paths.

The school has embraced the competence-based curriculum introduced by the government, which focuses on both academic learning and the practical application of skills.

In 2020 Chinyika High School celebrated the opening of a world-class science laboratory, a significant milestone in the school's development.

The new facility is equipped with modern equipment, allowing students to engage in practical experiments, particularly in the sciences. The lab's opening marks a major step forward in enhancing the quality of education at Chinyika, offering students improved learning experiences and opportunities for academic success in subjects like Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.

This development reflects the school’s commitment to academic excellence and future growth.

Chinyika High School has made significant strides in improving its infrastructure, recently constructing a new library and an A-Level classroom block.

The new library offers students access to a wide range of educational resources, enhancing their ability to research and study effectively. The addition of the A-Level block provides a dedicated space for senior students to focus on their advanced studies in a conducive learning environment.

These developments are part of the school’s ongoing commitment to providing quality education and modern facilities for its learners.

The school operates a poultry farm, which is one of its most prominent income-generating projects. This project allows students to gain hands-on experience in animal husbandry, which is particularly beneficial for those interested in agricultural careers.

Additionally, the poultry project supplies the school with eggs and meat, which are used in the school’s dining facilities, helping to reduce food costs.

Surplus production is sold to the local community, generating revenue for the school.

2. Crop Farming:

This project also gives students practical knowledge in agricultural practices, enhancing their understanding of sustainable farming techniques.

3. Sewing and Uniform Production:

Another notable project at Chinyika High School is the production of school uniforms.

The school has established an internal sewing project where uniforms are made for students, both reducing costs for parents and generating revenue through the sale of these uniforms.

This initiative also provides students with basic tailoring skills, which are valuable for future vocational opportunities. The sewing project not only contributes to the school’s financial health but also provides students with entrepreneurial and technical skills.

Chinyika High School offers a diverse range of sports to its students, promoting both physical fitness and teamwork. The sports program includes popular activities such as netball, soccer, athletics, and volleyball, providing opportunities for both boys and girls to compete and stay active.
