Jonh Tallach High School History & Background
John Tallach High School is a mission boarding school run by the Presbyterian Church. The mixed school is located in Ingwenya, a rural community 40 km outside Bulawayo. The school was opened in 1958 and is named after Rev John Tallach (1890–1955) a 20th century Free Presbyterian minister in Scotland who chose to do missionary work in Zimbabwe and once stayed at Ingwenya.
The school had O Level classes up until 2013 when it had its first A level class taking exams.
Jonh Tallach High School Pass Rate
The school has a strong academic record usually coming tops in pass rates compared to other high schools in Zimbabwe. The school posted impressive results in the 2019 O Level examination. The school had a 100% pass rate and came out as the best school in Zimbabwe.
This was no fluke. In 2013 the school had a 96.15% ‘O’ level pass rate coming top in Matabeleland and taking 4th place nationally.
A 92.96% pass rate was attained at O-Level in the 2015 exams.
The school attracts sharp students.

In 2018, an ‘A' level student named Primrose Tshuma came second in a prestigious SADC essay writing competition which was open to pupils from across the 11 nations of SADC. It made national news and even came to the attention of the President.
The prize-giving ceremony took place in Namibia where Primrose and her teacher went to collect the award by courtesy of the President’s private jet, followed by the additional honour of being invited to meet with him on their return!
She got US$2000 prize money from the president.
Jonh Tallach High School Enrollment & Entry Requirements
The school has over 600 pupils of which about 50 live locally. The school does not enrol strictly students of the Presbyterian Church to be enrolled. Pupils come from a wide variety of religious and economic backgrounds. Some come from Free Presbyterian Church homes while others are Seventh Day Adventist, Pentecostal or Roman Catholic. Many are a mixture of Christianity and African traditional religion.

New Learners are only accepted into Forms 1 and Lower 6 (Form 5).
FORM 1 Enrollment At Jonh Tallach High School
Form 1 enrolment is done through the Ministry of Education’s EMAP platform: this is usually available after publication of the Grade 7 results. No applications are accepted directly at the school. Once a place has been offered through EMAP, a registration pack will be sent out detailing all the required procedures and documentation.
Prospective boarding learners require a recommendation from their previous school.
FORM 5 (Lower Sixth) Enrollment At Jonh Tallach High School
Lower 6 applications are to be made direct to school, in-person/writing/by email, immediately after the publication of the ZIMSEC ‘O’ Level results. A copy of the ‘O’ Level results must be sent or brought to school. Once a place has been offered, a registration pack will be issued detailing all the required procedures and documentation.
Prospective boarding learners require a recommendation from their previous school.
Student Life At Jonh Talach High School
The school day starts with breakfast at 6 am in the dining hall. This is immediately followed by worship. Classrooms are then swept before assembly at 6:45 am in summer and 7:20 am in winter. Assembly starts with the singing of two verses from a psalm, led by a prefect, followed by the prayer and any announcements for the day. There are eight 40 minute lessons before lunch with a 30-minute interval after period four.

After lunch pupils do some manual work, typically raking paths or cutting grass or lifting litter. Afternoon studies start at 3 pm and last for two hours. Some practical subjects are arranged in the afternoon due to timetabling constraints.
Day pupils go home after this study session. After dinner boarding pupils return to school for an hour and a half of evening studies which finish at 8 pm. By 9 o’clock lights are out in the dormitories.
On Friday evening pupils have an evening off from studies and do a variety of activities. Friday afternoon and Saturdays are free with nothing timetable.
The school observes the Sabbath Day on Saturdays. Three services are held with two open to congregants from around the area and the last one only attended by school pupils at 6 pm.
All learners are required to conform to Mission principles and practices while at school, including attendance at all church services.
Boarding & Meal Conditions At Jonh Tallach High School
Jonh Tallach has basic boarding facilities to keep school fees as affordable as possible. Porridge is eaten for breakfast and sadza with milk, vegetables or meat is eaten for other meals.
The school has its own herd of cattle which provide a large percentage of the meat consumed at the dining hall. This is another way that the school keeps school fees low.
Jonh Tallach High School Fees 2020-2021
The John Tallach high school fees for 2021 are not available. However, the last known amount of fees to be paid was ZWL$920 per term in March 2019. At that time, teachers and other civil servants were earning about $500 each.

Jonh Tallach High School Uniform

The students of Jonh Tallach High School have a variety of uniform options, including jerseys and blazers, weekend and sports uniforms, and Sabbath uniforms.
The school badge must be embroidered on all Jonh Tallach High School uniforms including dresses, blouses, shirts, jerseys, blazers, lab coats and dust coats for school wear.
Please note that the correct version of the school badge has a black background, not a blue background.
Watches should be plain and of simple design.
The black blazer for Forms 1 – 4 is optional.
If in doubt about colours please check with the school as incorrect colours will not be accepted.
Girls are strongly encouraged to have long natural hair. Hair may be plaited in simple freehand styles or pushed back.e

Jonh Tallach High School Motto/Slogan
The motto is ‘Thy Word is lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119: 105). This stresses the importance of scriptures at the school as they guide the operation of the school. Pupils are also moulded using scriptures to ensure that they are upright and responsible members of society.
