The Milken-Motsepe Innovation Prize program is a series of multi-year, multimillion-dollar prize competitions for technological solutions that accelerate progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a spotlight on Africa
The inaugural Milken-Motsepe Prize focuses on accelerating progress towards SDGs 1 and 2: no poverty and zero hunger. The Milken-Motsepe Prize in AgriTech is a global competition for innovative solutions to increase economic value to farmers, from seed to sale.
Registration is free and open to anyone, with a $1 million grand prize available for the winning team, and $1 million in additional prizes.
The prize program mobilizes significant financial and human capital through its inclusive and integrated approach to access and mobility for innovators and startups.
The inclusive ethos of the prize program provides an equal opportunity for success—irrespective of age, status, education, location, or past achievements.
There will be significant new data captured and ideas generated from the range of innovations and field tests. Prizes are useful tools to accelerate data capture for evidence-based research.
The inaugural Prize challenges innovators from around the world to significantly increase value to small and medium-sized farms in Africa through new technologies and agribusiness innovation.
Competition Rounds
- DESIGN ROUND
Teams submit their design and business model. An independent panel of expert judges will select up to 25 teams to receive $10,000 each and advance in the competition.
- FINALIST ROUND
Teams develop their prototypes and conduct field tests on small and medium-sized farms in Africa.

Awards
Winning teams will increase net economic value to small and medium-sized farms by:
- Developing innovative technology solutions for any stage of the food system, from seed to sale
- Designing a viable business model
- Increasing farm productivity and/or decreasing post-harvest loss
The winning team will receive a $1 million grand prize, with $1 million in additional prizes.
