Originally founded as a boarding school for gifted African boys, it was the second school of its kind in the then Rhodesia, following Goromonzi High School.
Named after Sir Frank Fletcher, the school began with an enrollment of 115 Form One students and 25 commercial students.
In 1960, the school introduced the Sixth Form with 21 students, becoming one of the first institutions in Southern Rhodesia to offer advanced-level education to Black students.
The school transitioned to a co-educational model in 1982, initially enrolling girls from Form One to Form Four and later expanding to include girls in Lower Six by 1985.
